Delta Sonic "Super Kisses" Roswell's Center for Genetics & Pharmacology with $1.5 Million Gift
Delta Sonic Car Wash Systems, Inc. invested in downtown Buffalo through a $1.5 million contribution to help build Roswell Park Cancer Institute's Center for Genetics & Pharmacology. The gift is the single largest individual or corporate donation ever received by the Institute.
The five-story, 170,000 square foot Center is located at the corner of Ellicott and Virginia Streets in Buffalo--just a few blocks from the site of Delta Sonic's new state-of-the-art car care facility, o n Main Street between Bryant and Barker streets.
"This gift affirms our commitment to the tremendous work being done by Roswell Park, and to the promise its new Center offers for finding cures and saving lives," said Cheryl Ludwig, Executive Director of Marketing at Delta Sonic.
Ludwig added that the decision to make a leadership gift also was tied to Delta Sonic's continued efforts to invest in downtown Buffalo's economic future. "The entire Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) represents a huge opportunity to grow businesses right here in the heart of downtown," said Ludwig. "We want to be a part of that resurgence through our physical presence in our own new Main Street location, and by making this impact gift."
Delta Sonic's contribution brought Roswell Park's "Horizons of Hope" capital campaign to the $19.7 mark of a $21 million capital fundraising goal. The gift is recognized with lobby signage near the building's first floor elevators during a future naming ceremony.
"This generous gift will yield results far beyond the construction phase, and will impact thousands of lives," said David C. Hohn, MD, President and CEO of Roswell Park. "Our scientists will be developing new insights about the genetic causes of cancer within the Center. They also will work collaboratively with our BNMC and other business partners to test and perfect new pharmacological approaches to treat and prevent cancer."
The Roswell Park building--scheduled for completion by winter 2006--will provide state-of-the-art lab space and collaborative conferencing facilities for 200 employees, including 60 scientists. The Center will serve as a cornerstone of the Buffalo Life Sciences Complex on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. It will adjoin the New York State Center for Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences at the University at Buffalo, which will be connected via a bridge to the new Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute Center for Structural Biology.

Delta Sonic donates to Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund
Delta Sonic Car Wash Systems donated $18,573.04 to the Greater Buffalo Chapter of the American Red Cross for relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina victims. "A quick way for us to respond was to donate the proceeds of the scented tree fragrances for cars, a very popular item at our car wash," Cheryl Ludwig, Director of Marketing for Delta Sonic stated.
The donation will help American Red Cross to continue their efforts in providing shelter and millions of hot meals to over 900,000 displaced victims. The American Red Cross has launched the largest mobilization of resources for a single natural disaster, involving thousands of trained disaster relief workers and masses of supplies.
To date 213,630 disaster relief volunteers have been deployed to assist the residents of the affected areas. The American Red Cross Family linking website helps to locate missing loved ones and has already registered 287,000 people in an effort to reunite with family members and neighbors. The American Red Cross continues to ensure that the evacuees are as comfortable and informed as possible.
"It is the compassionate response of donors like Delta Sonic that makes this entire operation feasible," Nancy Blaschak, executive director of the Greater Buffalo Chapter of the American Red Cross said. The "donation is deeply appreciated by the entire American Red Cross organization and all of our volunteers and victims who are working hard to rebuild the lives and communities of the Gulf Coast."
